Editorial : From Library Journal After documenting the wild lives of Bill Graham (Rage & Roll, LJ 3/15/94) and River Phoenix (Lost in Hollywood, Donald I. Fine, 1995), Glatt turns to the decidedly tamer story of the Chieftains, a group that brought traditional Irish music back from the brink of extinction in the mid-Sixties and became unlikely pop stars in the 1990s. Otherwise quite entertaining, this relentlessly upbeat "authorized" biography is marred by redundant quotes from the bandmembers and associates, factual inconsistencies, and the lack of a discography. Also, when Glatt is stonewalled by the group's charismatic (if controlling) leader, Paddy Maloney, he sidesteps darker periods of the band's past. Still, this is the first full biography of Ireland's most important band, and with the success of the Riverdance and Lord of the Dance stage shows?whose star, Michael Flatley, once danced regularly with the Chieftains?demand for things Irish may be high. The history of the Chieftains over the last thirty-five years is the remarkable tale of how an unlikely group of enthusiasts came together to rescue some of the world’s most beautiful music from near-extinction, brought it to an audience of millions, and became stars. Based on exclusive and extensive interviews with all the band’s members, their families and friends, and with many of the international superstars who have recorded with them, The Chieftains tells the group’s own story for the first time, with insight, wit, and charm.

Knowing the extent of the fiction involved would have really hurt my strong feelings after seeing the movie Hidalgo. I obviously didn't read it then. The strength the presented was moving and inspiring. I cannot wait to see what Pepper Winters offers us next. This book contains great projects and good instruction. It would be nice to see a book with the best of both worlds, but if you simply want to learn and understand the topic, this book is the way to go. After that, it goes on to things like lathes and mills.
I come from a white-collar family, so this helped me overcome the handicap of my background. Wonderful little book on love. But others are so disturbingly wrong that I had to read the passages several times to believe that a mathematician could have written this.
One notable example is when the author calculates (correctly for
