Editorial : From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Hugo-winner Simmons, the author of such acclaimed space operas as Hyperion and Olympos as well as Drood, an intriguing riff on Dickens's unfinished last novel, displays the impressive breath of his imagination in this historical novel with a supernatural slant. In the author's retelling of Custer's last stand at the Little Big Horn in 1876, the dying general's ghost enters the body of Paha Sapa, a 10-year-old Sioux warrior who's able to see both the past and the future by touching people. The action leaps around in time to illustrate the arc of Sapa's life, but focuses on 1936, when, as a septuagenarian, he plots to blow up the monuments on Mount Rushmore in time for a visit to the site by FDR to atone for his role in constructing the stone likenesses. In his ability to create complex characters and pair them with suspenseful situations, Simmons stands almost unmatched among his contemporaries. 6-city author tour. (Feb.)
Paha Sapa, a young Sioux warrior, "counts coup" on General George Armstrong Custer at the moment Custer lies dying on the battlefield at Little Bighorn. He feels the legendary general's ghost enter him then and will hear that ghost's voice within him for the rest of his life. In "Black Hills, " Dan Simmons seamlessly weaves together the stories of Paha Sapa, Custer, and the American West, from the Battle of the Little Bighorn up through the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, depicting a violent and tumultuous time in the history of both Native and white Americans. Haunted not only by Custer's ghost but also by his ability to see into the memories and futures of men like the Sioux war-chief Crazy Horse and Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor responsible for Mount Rushmore, Paha Sapa's long life is driven by a dramatic vision he experienced as a boy in his people's sacred Black Hills.
The printed version didn't arrive until after I had finished reading the e-book version. My four year old son certainly identifies with Squirrel and his overexcited way of aiding all his friends, AND the tree, AND the river
Squirrel and all his little friends have such distinct characters that lead to and flesh out the adventures: hardworking mouse putting aside supplies for winter, slow-moving relaxed sleepy turtle who finds a way to play with Squirrel the Ever Zippy, Rabbit who really dislikes getting wet and will do much to save himself from the rain. Different sizes of prints (12 X 16 inch or 16 X 20 inch) are available and more costly of course. The ending was satisfying but still leaves a few questions unanswered therefore setting the stage for the sequel, forthcoming. There are some pages in color, not the whole book.
