I am a clinical psychologist and psychology professor, and I read everything I can manage about post-traumatic stress and PTSD. I will say the same about the other 2 books in the series. Gavin is still cursed to be stone by day and man by night. That is is a sobering thought and should be in the back of the readers mind as they wander through the world of Tess and Q.
As dark as the concept for this book was, I cannot say enough about Tears of Tess. But as Baron points out, the pencil is itself a technological marvel, one that required as much engineering know-how in its day as the iPad does now. [It] is a kind of hell and at the same time is a 'solution' to a deeper hell, keeping us significantly removed from having to openly feel and be with what is really hurting us." pg 197
With sadness we are registering loss and therefore there is some flow to this emotion (energy in motion) whereas in depression, the emotions are pressed down and there is no flow.
