Editorial : From Booklist Lane, the business and financial correspondent for The Economist's Italy bureau, conducts a tour of southern Italy—from the tip of Sicily, north through Calabria, and beyond Naples. His focus is on the various branches of the Mafia in Italy: the Cosa Nostra in Sicily, the Camorra in Naples and Campania and environs, the 'Ndrangheta in Calabria, and the Sacra Corona Unita in the Apulian heel. Lane conducts interviews both with those affected by the Mafia (nearly everyone) and those who try to fight it. He obviously knows whereof he writes, but he may know a bit too much. The book is exhaustive but also exhausting. The chapters have a geographical thread but too much of a sameness—the Mafia controls everything. This in-depth examination of the Mafia will interest those deeply involved with the topic, but it lacks the dramatic punch and cohesiveness of Roberto Saviano's Gomorrah (2007), which showed how the Camorra's tentacles extended from the single port of Nap
In this investigation into the criminal underworld of the cities and villages of the Italian South, David Lane provides an unrivaled exposé of the operations of the Mafia today From Naples, home of Mafia-controlled mozzarella and toxic waste, through the no less rotten Calabria, to Sicily, cradle of Cosa Nostra, the hold of the Mafia on Southern Italy is as strong as ever. Following a multi-decade career as a journalist in Italy, David Lane uses his extensive contacts into the world of organized crime to demonstrate how globalization has transformed the Mafia into more than simply a global phenomenon. In painful detail, Into the Heart of the Mafia describes the unceasing mafia pressure endured by priests and politicians, businessmen, trade unionists, and ordinary citizens, and the risks undertaken by the policemen, judges, and politicians who fight to weaken the Mafia's influence. A travelogue with the most deadly of implications,
I used the larger DK books for Italy and Ireland and was not as happy.. The book was worth the wait and I hope you're well now, Mark.. Nor did I read any of the articles that appeared in the 70s. If you like mathematics, even if you did not major in math, read this book. As he is trying to come to terms with being gay he has a lot he is battling. Healing. On the down side, the book is getting a bit dated. Even those outside of the USA will benefit from it, as it will certainly illuminate the tension and schizophrenia and contradictions and rewritten history of our country. He is also sweet, kind, and super shy. The photography is sexy without needless inhibitions. On the downside, I thought the overall execution of the story was too cozy. Brax is then beaten and left for dead. It's not a solution to our race problems or an accurate assessment of the progress of America as a nation. Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques
